Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with some free mini knits! In collaboration with Qing Fibre I have designed some free mini knitting patterns to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated in many East Asian communities, and is also called the Moon Festival or the Mooncake Festival. It traditionally falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, so in 2020 the festival falls on October 1. It is the second most important festival in China after Chinese New Year. The festival celebrates what is believed to be the brightest moon of the year and the autumn harvest. This festival is all about gathering with family and loved ones, being thankful, admiring the moon, and eating mooncakes! Cute little rabbits and autumnal osmanthus flowers celebrate the autumn months too. These mini knits were knitted on straight single-pointed knitting needles, in size 3mm. Each uses only a few grammes of DK weight yarn, so they are perfect for using up scraps, and they look gorgeous in Qing Fibre's colourful yarns! If you don't have any toy filling to stuff these little knits you can use cotton wool balls or yarn scraps instead. You can find the free knitting patterns from: Osmanthus Flower Moon Bunny Mooncake Mooncake Slice MooncakesMooncakes are the must-eat Mid-Autumn Festival food; they are a dense pastry made of lotus seed paste and salted duck egg yolk, although different Asian regions prefer different flavours. The roundness of mooncakes is a symbol of reunion and happiness. Moon BunnyThe Moon Bunny in legend lives on the moon; this legend comes from markings on the moon that look like a bunny rabbit, similar to the “Man on the Moon” legend in the West. The Moon Bunny is a symbol for the Mid-Autumn Festival, and is also associated with other moon myths in Asia. Osmanthus FlowersThe Mid-Autumn Festival is also a time when osmanthus flowers blossom and spread a sweet scent. The fragrance is a symbol of prosperity and auspiciousness, and wine fermented with osmanthus flowers is a popular gift during the season. I enjoyed working on this project so much, I learned all about the Festival, and I am very grateful to all the team at Qing Fibre for all their support. I hope you enjoy knitting your mini knits too.
