A voracious reader and little poet, my bookworm’s name is William Wormsworth, but friends call him Billy. He has munched through an apple as he reads his books. The apple is weighed down with dried rice inside, so it can be used as a paperweight on your desk. This would make a super thank you gift for your teacher or librarian. This pattern is suitable for advanced beginner or intermediate knitters. All pieces are knitted flat (back and forth) on a pair of straight single-pointed knitting needles. Other techniques used in this pattern include casting on and off, knit, purl, working increases and decreases, and sewing seams. The finished apple and worm are 10.5cm tall. I knitted Billy using Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK yarns, which are acrylic washable DK weight yarns ideal for toy making. I used the shades “Signal Red”, “Lime”, “Orchard” and “Chocolate’. To make your apple and worm will also need a tapestry needle for seaming, a small plastic bag filled with dried rice (approx 100g) to weigh down the apple, two 6mm toy safety eyes, and approximately 30 cm of black embroidery thread. I used a pair of 3cm doll’s spectacles for my worm. And as a few people have asked where I got these, I purchased my glasses from an Etsy UK store (I chose the 3.1cm size in silver). If you search online for “wire doll glasses” you can find them in a range of colours and sizes from other online stores including Amazon and specialist doll making websites. And for an even cheaper version, try making spectacles from a paperclip using this tutorial. I hope this helps you to finish your bookworm. 🍎🐛📖 🍎🐛📖🍎
Happy knitting!
