My line up of knitted dogs …. I wonder which will win “Best in Show” …. Jack Russell, Pug, Rottweiler, Schnauzer or the Alsatian?. My new knitting pattern is making an exclusive appearance in Simply Knitting magazine this month. These little dogs are about 7.5cm tall, small enough to carry in your pocket if you need a little friend. I made my puppy pals in Deramores Studio DK yarns, but any DK (light worsted weight or 8 ply yarn) can be used. You will need six colours to make all the breeds: Frost (white), Ebony (black), Oatmeal (beige), Gingerbread (mid brown), Chocolate (dark brown) and Mist (grey). All the pieces are knitted flat (back on forth) on a pair of 3.25mm single pointed needles. For my dogs I used 12mm toy safety noses, but if you don’t want to use those you could embroider a nose in yarn instead. Similarly, I used black beads for eyes but you can swap for buttons, toy safety eyes or embroidery. The Alsatian, Jack Russell and Schnauzer patterns incorporate intarsia colour-work so are slightly more advanced, but the other dogs are suitable for advanced beginner/intermediate knitters. I used the crochet hook method to attach the whiskers on the Schnauzer’s snout and I have a tutorial showing how to do that here. 🐶 🐾 🦴 🐶
I hope you enjoy making your little puppy friends too, and happy knitting all!
