My new knitting patterns are making an appearance in Simply Knitting magazine issue 218 (December 2021). Steam MachineKeep your little engine drivers on the right track with this knitted train set. With no sharp edges, moving parts, or batteries to worry about, this set will bring hours of play for little ones. The set comprises of an engine, coal truck, passenger carriage, freight truck with barrels, and a brake van. These are joined with buttons so you can take the set apart, but in total the length is 56cm. All pieces are knitted flat (back and forth) on a pair of straight single-pointed knitting needles. This pattern incorporates intarsia colour-work for the windows, and a three needle bind off. You will also need to cast on and off, knit, purl, work increases and decreases, and sew seams. I knitted my train in Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK acrylic yarns, but any DK weight yarn would be suitable. You will also need 2.75mm single pointed knitting needles, toy filling, buttons, sewing needle and thread. 🚂🚂 🚂🚂 🚂🚂 🚂🚂🚂🚂 Dress Up DinnerThis cheery robin red breast perching on his Yule log makes a perfect centrepiece for your festive table. The log is 14cm wide x 17.5cm tall. All pieces are knitted flat (back and forth) on a pair of 3.25mm straight single-pointed knitting needles using DK yarns. I used Hayfield Bonus DK yarn in shades Chocolate, White, Emerald, Oatmeal, Signal Red and Sunflower, but any similar DK weight yarn would work well. You will also need toy filling, stitch markers and toy safety eyes. Techniques you need to know to make the robin and log includes knit, purl, cast on and off, increases and decreases, knitting stripes, and intarsia colour work. 🪵🌲🪵🎄🪵 I hope you enjoy knitting these, and have a great week!
