Unfortunately as time goes by, yarn companies will discontinue certain ranges, and sadly some of the shades of the yarn I used to make my Nativity set have been discontinued since I originally made it. So in this post I have suggested some alternative yarns you could use instead. I have used 13 different colours, but don’t be put off by this as you only need small amounts of yarn so this is a great way to use up remnants from your yarn stash. My A Child is Born Nativity Set knitting pattern is from LoveCrafts.com. For my Nativity set I used “Patons Baby Smiles 4 Ply” yarn on 3.25mm needles. The Patons yarn is a 100% acrylic yarn, sold in 50g/184m skeins. Although you can still find the Patons yarn from selected retailers, the full colour range may not be available. You can, of course, use any colours you like to knit your Nativity, so here are two alternative 4 ply yarns with a good choice of colours. “King Cole Merino Blend 4 ply” is a 100% wool yarn, and “King Cole Giza 4 ply”, is a 100% cotton yarn. Both of these yarns are sold in 50g skeins. Bear in mind that you don’t need to use a 4 ply yarn for your Nativity, you may prefer to knit in a DK acrylic yarn. Generally DK acrylic yarns have a wider range of colours to choose from. “Hayfield Bonus DK”, “Stylecraft Special DK” and “Paintbox Yarns Simply DK” are great yarns for knitting toys. I would also use the same 3.25mm needles with these yarns. And finally, because you only need a small amount in each colour shade to make the Nativity, these adorable 25g skeins of “Rico Creative Ricorumi DK” 100% cotton yarns would be great for this project. There is a huge colour choice to pick from, sold in individual skeins or colour packs.
I hope this information is helpful for you to choose which yarn to use for your project. The links above are correct at the time of writing this post, but if any links are broken since, please do let me know and I will update them for you. And if you have any yarn suggestions you would like me to share here please do get in touch.
