Unfortunately as time goes by, yarn companies will discontinue certain ranges. Some of the shades of the yarn I used to make my “Go Wild!” safari animals have been discontinued since I designed them for Simply Knitting magazine way back in 2017. So in this post I have suggested some alternative yarns you could use instead. The knitting patterns for these toys are now available from LoveCrafts.com: Alec the Alligator, Eric the Elephant, Leon the Lion and Mick the Monkey. For my toys I used “Patons Baby Smiles 4 Ply” yarn on 3.25mm needles. The Patons yarn is a 100% acrylic yarn, sold in 50g/184m skeins. Although you can still find the Patons yarn from selected retailers, the full colour range may not be available. You can, of course, use any colours you like to knit your toys, so here are some alternative 4 ply yarns with a good choice of colours. “King Cole Merino Blend 4 ply” is a 100% wool yarn, and “King Cole Giza 4 ply”, is a 100% cotton yarn. Both of these yarns are sold in 50g skeins. Bear in mind that you don’t need to use a 4 ply yarn for these toys, you may prefer to knit in a DK acrylic yarn. “Hayfield Bonus DK”, “Stylecraft Special DK” and “Paintbox Yarns Simply DK” are great yarns for knitting toys as they are fairly priced and washable so easy to clean. I would also use the same 3.25mm needles with these yarns. I hope this information is helpful for you to choose which yarn to use for your project. The links above are correct at the time of writing this post, but if any links are broken since, please do let me know and I will update them for you.
