There are a few methods to add hair to a doll. This method may seem a little complicated, but with practice it is much quicker than knotting individual strands onto a doll's head, and it is surprisingly sturdy. I used this technique to add a grass skirt and hair to my Hula Girl Doll. How to add hairStep 1: Cut a length of yarn at least 1 metre long (you will have to cut more lengths as needed as you work). I am using green yarn in the photos to add the grass skirt. Thread the yarn onto a darning needle. Step 2: Insert the needle up and under the horizontal bar of a stitch. Step 3: Pull the needle out and bring the yarn under that horizontal bar, leaving an 8cm tail. Step 4: Insert the needle back under the same horizontal bar again in the same direction as in step 2. Step 5: Bring the needle and yarn through under the horizontal bar and pull tight, leaving that 8cm yarn tail from step 3. Step 6: Insert the needle horizontally under the legs of the next stitch. Step 7: Pull the needle and yarn through under the legs of the stitch. Step 8: Insert the needle up and under the next horizontal bar. Step 9: Pull the needle out and bring the yarn under that horizontal bar, leaving a loop of yarn 8cm long. Step 10: Insert the needle back under the same horizontal bar again in the same direction as in step 8. Step 11: Bring the needle and yarn through under the horizontal bar and pull tight, leaving that 8cm long loop from step 9. Step 12: Insert the needle horizontally under the legs of the next stitch. Next: Repeat steps 7 to 12 to add more loops. Don’t worry if they are different lengths, you will trim these later. When all the loops are added, cut through the end of the loops and trim your strands to an even length. I used the same technique to add the hair to the doll using brown yarn around the crown of the head. I made the loops for the hair 12cm long, and trimmed to style it. If you want longer hair for your doll, simply make longer loops.
