There seem to be quite a few techniques to knit loops, so I thought I would share the one I prefer to use. This makes a single loop worked on the right side of the fabric. How to knit a loop Please note, these directions are for right-handed knitters. STEP 1: Work to the position of the loop in your pattern. Knit into the next stitch, but do not allow the stitch to fall off the needle. STEP 2: Bring the working yarn to the front between the two needles. STEP 3: Place your thumb on the working yarn, and wrap the yarn around and over the top of your thumb, and back between the two needles. (Next time I do a tutorial I will have a proper manicure first!!) STEP 4: Keeping the yarn wrapped around your thumb, knit into the same stitch again. STEP 5: Allow this stitch to fall off the needle, and the loop to fall off your thumb. You now have two new stitches and a loop on the right hand needle. STEP 6: Insert the left needle into the front of the two stitches on the right needle, and knit together. And now you have finished your loop. I used this loop technique to knit loops for my Loopy Sheep pattern.

Thank you so much for the tutorial on knitting loops - like Diane I have spent 2 days trying to follow instructions on the pattern I'm using with no success - following your tutorial I'm a very happy lady who can now continue making a winter hat for my Granddaughter.

Any chance you could show how to do the loops for your Mac the highland bull pattern please? Im a fairly experienced knitter but have never done loops before. I have tried and tried but the pattern instructions to wrap the yarn around and under my thumb 3 times seems impossible! Thank you

At step 3 above wrap the yarn around the top of your thumb three times before taking it back between the needles to make a longer loop.

Thank you so much for this great tutorial. I didn't even know there was a loop stitch until a few days ago, but having found a pattern needing it I just couldn't understand any of the tutorials. That includes the videos. I then found you. I've been practicing this evening, I'll do some more, then have a look at my pattern. Definitely not too old to learn. I've put your website on my home screen as I'm sure I'm going to be referring again.

Think I might have it down. Can you only make the loop on every other stitch. A couple of tutorials I looked at said only use every other stitch for the loop stitch. Your tutorial was wonderful. Brand new at trying this. Thank you!!

Hello Sara, with this method you can make a loop on every stitch if you want to, you don't need to make it on every other stitch.
